A. Purchasing a franchise is as easy as looking in any newspaper classified section. They are always for sale. I worked in this industry for about 8 years 20+ years ago. It's all different now. I'm out of it for a reason. Be careful. If you can make money on these small routes that companies are always flipping and selling they would hire employees and run the business route themselves. You might put out 10-20 thousand for a route and when you see you are not making money you get out and they sell it to someone else. That's how they make their money. Now, if you buy a legitimate company from someone retiring or moving that's running the route and making money then you might find a good deal but people making money usually don't give up their… [cont.]

How would you network a vending machine in a corporate environment?
Q. I've got a client who's trying to create a cashless vending machine for a corporate environment. Using the cell network is too expensive and wireless is unreliable. We'd prefer to hardwire into an existing network in order to send encrypted data over the internet (to verify credit cards). Any advice on how this could/should be done?

A. those are usually pretty automatic if the machine is capable of it. usually the building should have a router for security (i think risc-based is fine) and for the most security i'd block all ports in and out except the one(s) that the cashless machine uses, it should know it's own servers it needs to connect to and stuff, if not, call the machine vendor

A. local state comptrollers office can help you with that. they will give you an tax-id, which will allow you to buy the items that go inside the machine taxfree. then whatever you make on the machine you pay taxes on the total, not the profit, but the total. probably around 6 - 9 cents for each dollar you collect. however remember its a cash bussiness they have no way of knowing what you actually made, I have heard of some venders making lts of money and only paying taxes on part of it, because no one can prove otherwise.
