A. While vending machines use a variety of methods to read bills, they check four different characteristics used to verify paper money: Bills are printed with magnetic ink, and different denominations generate distinctive magnetic fields. Bills have different conductivities (the rate at which they can conduct low levels of electricity). Ultraviolet scanning technology can determine the different fluorescent properties of bills. Digital cameras can reference the optical patterns in bills with a database of authentic patterns. A vending machine has to verify whether a bill is authentic before it determines its value. Asked by jenn209 - Wed Jul 22 22:50:19 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on the location, type of product and a bunch of other factors. If you get one in a hot state or something where there's a lot of thirsty people you figure a dollar a drink. You get the drinks wholesale at like 20 cents a pop. That's an 80 cent profit figure there's like what 500 cans in there, so if it takes a month to sell out then you figure you make 400 dollars of it. You sell out in a week then that's 1600 dollars a month minus any additional expense. It could be quite lucrative.

How much should I pay a business who lets me have my Vending Machine on their property?
Q. I am starting a vending machine business. I am writing up a proposal for my home owners association to ask if I can put in a vending machine in the pool area. This vending machine will get a lot of action in the summer months. When it is colder weather I imagine we will have less traffic; we will get the kids from the nearby school and people going to the gym. Should I offer them a percentage of my profit or a monthly fixed amount? If a fixed amount, how much?
Asked by Helen M - Mon Mar 29 17:06:13 2010 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Having a vending machine in the pool area is an amenity which benefits the HOA, and it should be presented as such. Whatever electricity you use is offset by the extra benefit to the organization. I would not offer any payment to them. If they ask for payment, reiterate the benefit they will receive. If they insist, offer a fixed amount that will just cover their electricity.

A. Well the main question of the hour is if this is a public school or a private school. Public schools are not a sound investment these days because of all the health food rules in schools, right now Coke and Pepsi are loosing tons of money because they had to pull all of their sodas out of the the public schools. Now the private schools are a different story, they can do as they please.

Asked by memorex1 - Mon Oct 5 09:30:51 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's all location, location, location. You're going to be up against some big competition from established vending companies that have sometimes hundreds of machines in tons of locations. I would start small. Find a great location that doesn't already have a machine. A busy break room at a smaller company or business is one of the best places to start. Next you'll need a machine...the combo drink/snack machines are a great place to start. Also, bulk machines...such as candy/nuts/mints that you pay a quarter for a handful. Keep in mind that you don't want to have your machine somewhere it could get vandalized or broken into.

How lucrative is the ice cream vending business? Looking at buying a bike to vend it?
Q. I am thinking about purchasing an ice cream vending bike an plan to operate it after work during the week and on weekends. The city population is about 35-40,000. What kind of operating costs can I expect and is there "decent" money to be made. Thank you for any help

A. My co-worker's dad has has an ice cream truck business for 10 years. He has supported himself his wife and two kids with this business. Put them through school, bought them cars, etc. According to my co-worker his dad brings in close to 100k a year. I don't know if that's true but it looks like it's profitable enough to support a small family and a mortgage. He also wanted to tell you that his Dad has had a few attempted robberies but because he is in a truck he was able to fight off the robbers. But on a bike you're exposed so be careful on those bad neigborhoods. I wish you the best of luck in your business.

A. I've found for the most part that gyms aren't a very good location for vending. We've had Powerade and Vitamin Water in a few local mid size gyms (about half the size of a Gold's Gym) and the best machines do maybe $60 in a week, some have done less than $20 in a week. (That's $1 for 20oz Powerade and $1.50 for 20oz Vitamin Water) These machines really have trouble selling the product before it goes out of date. We do have a machine at a Lady Fitness that sells over $120 of Dasani a week (5 Cases) despite the fact that the machine is right in front of a water fountain. I'm guessing that the customers buy the Dasani and reuse the bottles at the fountain? Either way, you'll find that gyms are really hit or miss.

A. Don't put candy in there, put in little toys or bouncy balls. I was at Old Navy a few months ago and after I bought one of those bouncy balls, all the little kids wanted one too. I'm 18 years old yet I'm still a sucker for little vending machine figurines/bouncy balls/whatever...especial ly those Spongebob things.

A. More than likely you will have to contact the owner or the manager of the business and simply ask if you are able to put up a vending machine. If a manager is not willing to talk to you, then ask whom may talk to, sometimes you may have to contact the corporate office.

Asked by Ohman - Mon Dec 8 15:38:17 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes you have to apply for the proper license to sell vending machines and you also must find out where you would like to place the machines. You will have a make deals with the location that you are looking at putting them. Also, just in case the key is stripped or if you lose the key you need to purchase a tubular pick for these odd ball scenarios. I use the PKA2 from Pro-Lok. I hope this helps.

A. As long as it is capable of being adjusted for new product dimensions, higher product pricing in the currency acceptor, and is in decent overall physical condition these things last decades.

How easy was it for kids to get cigarettes from vending machines?
Q. Back when there were vending machines that sold cigarettes, how easy was it to purchase them? How did they work? When did they get rid of them?

A. As someone who lives in a country where cigarette vending machines are still legal (England) I have an excellent knowledge of cigarette vending machines as, I used to get cigarettes from them all the time. How easy it is to get them depends on where the machine is, sometimes they are really well hidden and out of sight. Other times they will be on sight for all to see so a child trying to purchase cigarettes from the machine will be caught by an adult or member of staff immediately. Some places had cigarette machines that where quite visible, but the staff would turn a blind eye to you buying cigarettes as it would mean they'd be getting the money from it. Using them is basic enough, you have a choice of different types of cigarettes and… [cont.]

Q. A vending machine dispenses gumballs in a regularly repeating cycle of 10 different colors. If a quarter buys 3 gumballs, what is the minimum amount of money that must be spent before 3 gumballs of the same color are dispensed?

A. The first gumball be the same color as the 11th and 21st gumballs. Therefore you have to buy 21 gumballs to have three of the same color. This costs $1.75: 21 gumballs / 3 gumballs per quarter = 7 quarters = 1.75
