Websites about vending machines and how they work?
Q. I need to have a bunch of web sources about vending machines and how they work. I also need at least one source to have a video about the workings of the machine. Thanks!

A. Website? Forget that - go for bonus marks! Find the nearest vending machine, preferably not at school. Phone the company that owns it, (they have a sticker on it in case you lose your money in it) and ask to see their shop, where they service them. Bring a video camera.

A. While vending machines use a variety of methods to read bills, they check four different characteristics used to verify paper money: Bills are printed with magnetic ink, and different denominations generate distinctive magnetic fields. Bills have different conductivities (the rate at which they can conduct low levels of electricity). Ultraviolet scanning technology can determine the different fluorescent properties of bills. Digital cameras can reference the optical patterns in bills with a database of authentic patterns. A vending machine has to verify whether a bill is authentic before it determines its value. The U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing hosts this cool fact sheet about the security features used on its currency:… [cont.]

A. Any major city will have several vending machine providers. They'll install the machines, keep them stocked with food/beverage and you can set the price to either their prices or a small markup. Google "vending machines in Boston" or wherever you are.

A. Phone call to identify correct person, followed by Postcard, then Sales letter, followed by phone call, followed by visit. It is called a marketing campaign. small business just show up, give out some samples. Ask yourself why they would want you there? Profit? Keeping employees on site? Feel good about sharing profits with charity? "Healthy snacks" I think candy without drinks might be hard in some places.

A. Well the main question of the hour is if this is a public school or a private school. Public schools are not a sound investment these days because of all the health food rules in schools, right now Coke and Pepsi are loosing tons of money because they had to pull all of their sodas out of the the public schools. Now the private schools are a different story, they can do as they please.

how does the vending machine business work?
Q. In terms of business model, where does the revenue flow to and from? - Do corporate offices typically pay vending machine operators to put in and service machines or do operators pay corporate offices? How willing are offices usually to having machines put in? What are decision criteria used in selecting machines? - Do offices ever "buy" the machines? Or it is usually rented?

A. Nomally the business gets a cut from the vendor. The vendor owns and operates/stocks/repairs, the machines and pay the store or business owner a small cut to let the machine be there.

A. Better yet - check out this one: www.moobella.com I'm the engineer behind the pneumatic system in this machine. I'm not about to explain how it works, but there are about 40 motors, and 500 feet of tubing that allow it to make hard scoop ice cream on the spot from the raw ingredients - takes about 40 seconds, and it's SO much better than soft serve.

Should I start a vending machine business?
Q. I have some savings and have been looking into setting up vending machines in schools with healthy options. I know that a lot of schools are starting to ban machines that sell foods that are bad for you, so it looks like a good business to get into. (I regularly use an organic vending machine at the Gym, it's pretty cool... Kind of an oxymoron if you ask me. :-) Anyhow, does anybody have experience with operating a vending machine business, specifically with healthy (or organic) options? Thanks!

A. I think that you are on the right track thinking about putting vending machines in schools. I got started with a company out of California a couple of months ago putting healthy option vending machines in a couple of private schools where I live in Florida. There are a few companies that have healthy vending machines with organic options. Though I have not seen anybody market a completely organic vending machine as options might be too limited for a school environment. I used Healthy Vending ( ), they had a pretty good price point, and I liked the look of the machine. :-) Buying based on the look of the machine might sound frivolous, but looks help make the sale. Right now I only have a couple of machines in one location, but they… [cont.]

A. More than likely you will have to contact the owner or the manager of the business and simply ask if you are able to put up a vending machine. If a manager is not willing to talk to you, then ask whom may talk to, sometimes you may have to contact the corporate office.

Q. Want to get into the Vending machine business, what should I do first in purchasing a machine?
Asked by juicemann2000 - Fri Sep 21 01:59:58 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Purchasing a franchise is as easy as looking in any newspaper classified section. They are always for sale. I worked in this industry for about 8 years 20+ years ago. It's all different now. I'm out of it for a reason. Be careful. If you can make money on these small routes that companies are always flipping and selling they would hire employees and run the business route themselves. You might put out 10-20 thousand for a route and when you see you are not making money you get out and they sell it to someone else. That's how they make their money. Now, if you buy a legitimate company from someone retiring or moving that's running the route and making money then you might find a good deal but people making money usually don't give up their… [cont.]

A. I dont think there is a law, I work with a company that does vending. I just know you would get better business if you are available quick in case you need to fix a jam. Also, make sure the machines are clean. I do know you have to offer a good deal to businesses so that they can let you have your machines there.

Is a stair crawler suitable for lifting a vending machine up a big flight of stairs?
Q. We have a vending machine that we're trying to get up to the second story of a building. We can't use the lift. My Fiance's boss recommended hiring a stair crawler, which we can get for $99. I was just wondering if this is a good option. How many people would it need to operate it? Our vending machine is 300kg, so it's no small task.. Is it safe? Are we likely to drop it? I'm just freaking out a little and this is all new to me. Forgot to mention - the website says it is capable of lifting 300kg. I'm still a bit sceptical, though. Plus, the size of the machine is going to make it difficult..

How easy was it for kids to get cigarettes from vending machines?
Q. Back when there were vending machines that sold cigarettes, how easy was it to purchase them? How did they work? When did they get rid of them?
Asked by Me1984 - Wed Jun 4 00:27:01 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. As someone who lives in a country where cigarette vending machines are still legal (England) I have an excellent knowledge of cigarette vending machines as, I used to get cigarettes from them all the time. How easy it is to get them depends on where the machine is, sometimes they are really well hidden and out of sight. Other times they will be on sight for all to see so a child trying to purchase cigarettes from the machine will be caught by an adult or member of staff immediately. Some places had cigarette machines that where quite visible, but the staff would turn a blind eye to you buying cigarettes as it would mean they'd be getting the money from it. Using them is basic enough, you have a choice of different types of cigarettes and… [cont.]

Asked by JJ - Thu Jul 17 12:51:48 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. local state comptrollers office can help you with that. they will give you an tax-id, which will allow you to buy the items that go inside the machine taxfree. then whatever you make on the machine you pay taxes on the total, not the profit, but the total. probably around 6 - 9 cents for each dollar you collect. however remember its a cash bussiness they have no way of knowing what you actually made, I have heard of some venders making lts of money and only paying taxes on part of it, because no one can prove otherwise.

What is a healthy snack from the vending machines?
Q. What is a healthy snack to buy at a vending machine? What should I look for? At school there is usually cereal, Baked chips, Baked hot cheetos, goldfish flavor blasted, chex mix, rice krispies, famous amos cookies, different snack bars, and a few others etc..
Asked by alex - Thu Oct 16 20:22:20 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Usually there are only a few healthy snacks to choose from when buying from a vending machine. Out of what you listed the healthiest would probably be the chex mix or the cereal if it doesn't have tons of sugar in it. If they have granola bars that might be a good option too especially the Nature Valley brand. Also, check and see if they have any of the 100 calorie packs in the vending machine, I have seen more of those going in vending machines lately which is a good way to watch your calorie intake. But I'd suggest just bring a healthy snack from home. It would be cheaper than buying from a vending machine anyways.

Asked by Arielle H - Fri Nov 9 09:56:50 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Dont you have a meal plan at your school? Thats what I have, I usually eat at the cafe. Or sometimes I will buy stuff like milk and cereal and pop tarts or something like that to eat in the morning so i dont starve. But if u dont reside at ur college u should bring stuff with you to eat, its kinda hard to eat healthly from a vending machine, but if u were to buy something from it I would get some pretzels or a muffin or something like that. I suggest u stay away from sodas and get juice or water.
