Any suggestions as how to start successfully on your Mary Kay business?
Q. For those of you who are Mary Kay consultants, any tips/suggestions how to start out successfully on your Mary Kay business? I'm nervous + have fears that I will fail in starting my business. Not to mention I don't have enough money to even start out my business.

A. I am not a Mary Kay consultant, but I want to comment to you and help you a bit. The number one reason a business fails is under capitalization,,,If you dont have the money to start this,,,dont! Start saving your money! Get a bit saved and then look at the opportunity again. In the mean time,,,Look at what you can do to make some money on the side that does not require a major investment. Is there a service that you can provide? Service business usually have low costs to get started and can make you a nice profit. Good Luck!!!

Is it okay to sign up to sell Mary Kay through a director that lives 6 hrs away from you?
Q. Instead of signing up with one locally? Will it violate Mary Kay rules?
Asked by whatwhatwhat - Sat Aug 1 16:28:00 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I agree there are no territories however make sure you trust your director. Also if you can still attend all the meeting locally you can have an adoptive director. You will still have your orignal one but you will have someone to help you locally if need be. Great to see you making that step forward.

what can you deduct for a mary kay business?
Q. I'm considering starting a Mary Kay business and wanted to know all the tax deductions that are possible. I know there are 41 but I can't find any.

A. Check with the I.R.S. and the Small Business Administration for some free advice. You can deduct business expenses like advertising and travel. Check out Allocation of Income and Expenses, schedule P form 5735 at: This is the basic form you are looking for. You can deduct any equipment that is used exclusively for the business, like a file cabinet, which can be depreciated, usually over seven years, where you recover the expense of the equipment over time. You can also deduct the expenses for your car when used to travel for the business. You must keep a mileage log to qualify. If you use a computer and deduct it then that computer must be devoted entirely to the business, any personal programs on it will cancel this deduction You… [cont.]

How can you sell Mary Kay without having parties?
Q. Does anyone sell Mary Kay strictly off their website? How much business do you get thru the website? I am looking to make some extra money but I am really not into doing parties and bugging people. What are some other ways you can successfully sell Mary Kay?

A. Are you already signed up with MK and have product? Selling it is not easy and not having the people to sell to will be even harder. You can try selling it on ebay, but you won't make a dime. Get out before you've spent every penny you have and are left in despair. Every single consultant I ever met lied through their teeth about making money. The only way to make any money is to recruit others into selling it. Then, you have to continue to recruit since so many drop out because they can't sell it either! Directors don't have that many "parties". They make $ from you buying product! They get a comission. Don't be fooled about how this company works. I love the makeup and continue to use it for almost 30 years. I only use the… [cont.]

A. Your consultant starter kit will come with lots of great material that will help you to advertise including business cards. The most important thing is to simply let people around you know that you are a consultant. If you aren't sure how to sign up, just contact me at customizedbyu@aol.com and I'll send you the link.

Mary Kay Consultants, how do you manage clients and inventory?
Q. My wife is a new Mary Kay consultant and I am a retired I.T. Consultant. I have written a database to help her manage her clients, contacts, appointments, sales, inventory, etc. It is designed for a person starting out. I would like to make this database available to other consultants but I do not know how to get the info out. There is no advertising in the Applause magazine. Any ideas? I am offering it as 'shareware'. Free. But if you like it then please contribute to its support and maintenance. Thanks for the help.

A. Spread the word about it on some of the Mary Kay support (as in Mary Kay probably is a good thing) lists: Mary_Kay_Tools@yahoogroup s.com PinkBeGone@yahoogroups.co m are two possibilities. There are a couple of pro-Mary Kay blogs that might be willing to mention your program --- if The Pink Truth Blog hasn't revealed anything that their upline hasn't told them, or written something which otherwise irks them. If you are very brave, (foolhardy might be a better description), you can try mentioning it on pinktruth.com. [The Pink Truth Blog).

What benefits would I get from Mary Kay if I purchase $350 worth of items?
Q. To all the Mary Kay Advisors out there, if I buy $350 in products would I be considered a hostess and get the hostess benefits or since I am the only buyer I wouldn't be able to get any benefits? Example free items or extra credit or gifts and so on. What are the requirements to get rewards? thank you!
Asked by Barbie P - Thu Oct 23 10:08:47 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well I would have a few question before I could offer you anything. I always give my customers perks and am very leary when someone I don't know wants to make such a large purchase without seeing the products. I have sold that amount easily at a skin care class or holiday shopping but not online. So besides that no you would not be considered a hostess but might be able to get extra free stuff but we are independent contractors so you would need to speak directly to the consultant or a few consultants if you want to see who would offer the best deal. The other thought is if you are purchasing so much why not become a personal use consultant and save yourself in the long run.

Do not sign any contract (the agreement) until you have the info you want. I've been a consultant for almost 4 yrs. Some meetings are more "smooth" about it than others. I usually do something simple and cute Unitnet has a whole bunch or ideas then just list that it is Tupperware and MK. I focus on the convenience not so much the products. Avoid the stress of the mall parking lines and sore feet gift for women men and teens and I believe Tupperware has some things for children too don't they.

Did I make enough income from mary kay to report on income tax?
Q. I started selling Mary Kay in September. So far I've only made about $300 net profit in product sales. I didn't receive any forms from MK and I'm not sure how to report this, or even if i have to report it on my taxes this year. Does anyone have some advice?
Asked by mariay_99 - Mon Feb 1 15:39:11 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, you should report the income on a schedule c on your individual return assuming you have any other income, or are married and have a spouse that earns income, You'll need to report the gross receipts from MK or the customers depending on how that works (total amount paid to you) and then deduct related costs including food and beverages for parties, mileage on your vehicle, business cards, cost of goods sold, etc. You'll also have to keep track of any inventory you purchased. You may find that you actually incurred a loss after taking into consideration all the other expenses.

A. Clinique products are wonderful. Cliniqe is one of those examples of you DO get the quality you pay for. They not only have a wonderful assortment of skin care products and lotions, but they also have light hypo-allergenic make-up. You can purchase from their web site or from a department store that carries them like Belk, Bloomingdales, Saks Fith Ave, Dillards, and lots more. They are listed in the Clinique Counter Locator on the website.

What are the real costs of selling Mary Kay?
Q. I've been trying to research the cost of selling Mary Kay. I work full time, so I'm not fooling myself that I can make a living off this, but even if it's a little here and there. I just need to know what it really costs me. I know the $100 starter kit, but is there a min. I have to sell or buy each month like other companies? What about a fee? I don't want why I should sell it or how great it is, I just want to know what I'm looking at spending.

A. After you purchase your starter kit it is up to you what you do from there. You have a year to place and order but in order to get the 50% discount you need to be active which is a $200 wholesale order. I was skeptical at first but that really is only just one show. (when new you might only make 200 -300 a show as a seasoned consultant I do 500 -600 a show 4-6 people) You stay active for 3 month from you last 200 order. It is a little hard to explain via email. Did you consultant give you a contract it is a lot of small print but it explains it. You are starting a business so you have business expenses to make it successful. If you choose a website it is $25.00 for the first year $50.00 there after. The books come out quarterly… [cont.]
